The Passing of Hamish MacInnes

That the Parliament notes the sad passing of one of Scotland’s most internationally celebrated mountaineers, Hamish MacInnes, originally from Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway, at the age of 90; notes that Hamish, who first climbed the Matterhorn Mountain as a teenager and who was involved in Sir Chris Bonington’s successful Mount Everest Southwest Face expedition in 1975, was a hugely respected figure across the globe was largely respected as the father of modern mountain rescue; understands that his innovative outlook is largely known to be the catalyst for crucially important organisations such as the Search and Rescue Dog Association and the Avalanche Innovation Service, along with innovative resources such as the first all-metal ice axe and lightweight stretcher, following his attempted climb of Everest in 1953; notes that, during his remarkable lifetime, he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars from Clint Eastwood and Sir Sean Connery to Robert De Niro and Rita Hayworth in hit movies such as The Eiger Sanction, Five Days One Summer and The Mission; thanks Hamish for his contribution to the international hiking community; encourages all interested to watch the BBC Scotland documentary, Final Ascent: The Ledged of Hamish MacInnes, which is available on the BBC iPlayer, and sends Hamish’s family its very best wishes for the future.
