The Open University in Scotland: 56 Years of Opening Doors to Opportunities

That the Parliament congratulates The Open University in Scotland on celebrating the 56th anniversary of receiving its Royal Charter; believes that there are over 230,000 alumni of The Open University in Scotland, across every parliamentary constituency and region; understands that over 87,500 qualifications have been awarded to students in Scotland since 1971; notes that 26,900 modules were studied in the 2023-24 academic year; further notes that 54% of all Scotland-domiciled, part-time undergraduates study with The Open University in Scotland; understand that 22% of their new undergraduates in the 2023-24 academic year joined without standard university entrance qualifications; recognises that 30% of their students in Scotland declare a disability; believes that 42% of new undergraduate students live in Scotland’s most deprived areas; commends the OU for its geographical reach, with students from as far north as Shetland and as far south as Stranraer, and wishes the university and all its students every success for the future.
